I started travelling India shortly before Selfies got popular. I carried a single lens reflex camera. When people saw me using the camera they sometimes asked me to take a picture of them. The gaze was always straight into the camera. No pleasing smiles. No funny faces. No playful posing. It was never about the result since they never asked for a data file. It was about being recognized. It was about: That’s me, That’s my life. That’s who I am. The portraits you see here try to concentrate on this very moment. Working on the portraits was less about picturing a person than creating an encounter with a person.
What you see are all prints of some sort: Inkjet Plots, Gumprints, Etchings. The process usually starts with a ballpen sketch. Then there is a lot of digital work. At the end it’s the printing, analog and/or digital. Beat Reck
